  • Become a JDRF Advocate Now!!!!

Diabetes has had a profound effect on my life and those of my friends, family, and loved ones. As you may know, type 1 (juvenile) diabetes is a devastating disease, and while insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it’s NOT a cure. That’s why I’m committed to fighting for a cure through the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Advocacy program. Please join me in this effort to make a cure for type 1 diabetes a reality.

JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. JDRF is dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has given more than $1.16 billion to diabetes research.

Though JDRF is the leading charitable funder of diabetes research, the federal government plays an even more important role in the effort to find a cure for type 1 diabetes as the world’s largest funder of diabetes research. We need YOUR help to ensure federal support of diabetes research remains strong.

Time Magazine called JDRF “one of the nation’s most forceful disease advocacy groups.” When it comes to fighting type 1 diabetes, JDRF’s strength lies in our numbers and the ability of our Advocates to work together to build bonds—bonds with one another, as well as with our Members of Congress.  The relationships built through our advocacy program strengthen our community, provide support for those who are living with type 1 diabetes, and deliver our message—the need for a cure—faster and more effectively.

Just a few minutes of your time each year will make a difference in this crucial effort. Please join me and other JDRF Advocates by registering today.

  • What is FirstBook all about????

First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books. An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 60 million free and low cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them through an extensive volunteer network of Advisory Boards, First Book National Book Bank large-scale book distributions and the First Book Marketplace offering high-quality titles at reduced cost. First Book now has offices in the U.S. and Canada.

"What is so wonderful about First Book is that the kids can actually take the books home to keep. I don't have to say, 'No, that book has to stay here for another child next year.'"
    — Reading Specialist in a Washington, DC Public School

"First Book changed our world. Before First Book, we often wondered where we would get enough books to cover those in need. Thanks to First Book, we are able to provide beautiful new books [to the children we serve]. Trust me — they have never had the chance to own such a luxury. I wish I could send you all the hugs that we receive throughout the year. You deserve them and more. We love you!"
    — Jennifer E. Pierce, Bess the Book Bus (Tampa, FL)

"For once in my professional life, something that sounds too good to be true is even better than it sounds...you guys are the light at the end of the tunnel, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I wish you could have seen the smiles on faces of kids and teachers. Thanks to you!"
    - Susan Fraker Carnes, Librarian and Teacher (Houston, TX)

First Book: Do You Remember the Magic of Your First Book?

  • FirstBook

Mission: First Book provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.

Inspiration: Kyle Zimmer, a corporate lawyer by day, tutored children at an inner-city soup kitchen by night. She discovered that the children she tutored had no books to read. That year, Kyle left her day job, and she and two friends founded First Book to provide new books and resources to the children who needed them the most. They delivered 12,000 books to local communities in the Washington DC area the first year.

Motivation: Kyle discovered that fully 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for the children they serve. Millions of children spend thousands of hours every week in programs and schools that are starving for resources necessary to improve educational quality.

Empowerment: By providing new books to children in preschools and after-school programs, mentoring and tutoring programs, shelters and day care centers and beyond, First Book provides resources to empower teachers and administrators. With access to high-quality books, educational materials and more, these caring leaders can better teach, plan curriculum and impart a love of learning, elevating the quality of the programs and opportunities available to children in need.

Achievement: Now, nearly 20 years later, First Book has delivered more than 65 million books to programs serving children in need across the United States and Canada. Learn more about the honors and awards received by First Book.
